Mike Stubbington

Vice President, Computational Technologies

Mike is a computational biologist with deep expertise spanning single-cell genomics, epigenomics, and technology-driven drug discovery. He joined biomodal as Vice President of Computational Technologies to lead the development of the analytical methods, software tools, and data science capabilities that underpin biomodal’s multimodal biology platform.

He joins us with a career that spans some of the most consequential moments in modern genomics. After completing a PhD at the Babraham Institute, where his work on immune system diversity involved the development of novel next-generation sequencing assays and analytical methods alongside exposure to the epigenetic research of Wolf Reik’s group. Mike moved into computational biology as a postdoctoral researcher with Sarah Teichmann at the European Bioinformatics Institute and the Wellcome Sanger Institute. He worked at the forefront of the, then new, field of single cell genomics and was among the founding team of the Human Cell Atlas, the international initiative to map every cell type in the human body.

Mike then spent over four years at 10x Genomics in Computational Biology R&D, leading product development teams, shaping strategy, and developing analytical methods, experiencing the company’s growth through its IPO. Most recently, he held senior R&D leadership roles building the initial data-generation strategy as Head of Biology at Synteny and as CSO at CS Genetics, where he led development of an instrument-free single-cell RNA-seq method with direct applications in drug discovery.

His rare combination of academic rigour, platform-building experience, and commercial R&D leadership makes him ideally placed to scale biomodal’s computational capabilities as the company grows.

Mike holds an MSci in Natural Sciences and a PhD both from the University of Cambridge. He is an author on over 30 scientific publications and a named inventor on over 20 patents and patent applications.
